On the Buses: Book 8

Once again, the clippie’s ticket machine whirs and the trolley wires sing as the evocative, new bookazine, On the Buses: Book 8 goes on sale. In this  new publication, enthusiasts will get the chance to take a detailed look at the sunshine fleet of Bournemouth Corporation Transport during the 1960s, featuring its extensive trolleybus and motorbus networks.

The 100-page publication also includes a look at the fascinating SHMD Joint Board operation, based on Stalybridge in Tameside, where buses were hooked up at night to pre-warm them for the next day’s service. The full set of three former W Alexander & Sons companies following the 1961 split, are all visited and, two little Derbyshire Peak District independents are discussed as well; Hulley of Baslow and Silver Service.

The remaining ports of call include the Isle of Man, where independent coach operators are recalled and, Northampton Corporation, a fleet whose success reflected that of the burgeoning shoe industry in the town.
