Graham Tyler’s stationary engine estate sale

Posted by Chris Graham on 27th January 2022

Stationary Engine’s Patrick Knight reports from the auction of the residual items left over from the late Graham Tyler’s estate sale.

Graham Tyler's estate sale

Graham Tyler’s estate sale: This little Stuart Turner engine and compressor sold for £160.

On Tuesday, 28th September the Linton Trading Estate, Bromyard, Herefordshire saw John Goodwin Auctioneers, conduct a vintage and collectable sale which included the residual items left over from the late Graham Tyler’s estate sale held earlier in the year. The sale was also screened live on the internet, which allowed prospective purchasers to participate in the sale without actually being there.

This 1½hp Fowler looked to be complete and ripe for restoration, yet it made just £50.

The items of interest for stationary engine enthusiasts included a few engines that looked to be complete and possible runners after a little TLC. The majority of the lots, however, were incomplete engines (possible restoration projects) and engine spares. The condition of the incomplete engines and spares can be gauged by the prices achieved.

Although this Lister CD diesel looked to be complete, it only made £25.

The images in the catalogue showed pallet-loads of engine parts making it impossible to see just what goodies there were in each lot. Indeed, the prices realised for some of the ‘parts lots’ suggested that there were a few hidden treasures to be found in among them.

There were several Lister switch boards on offer; this was the best of the bunch, and it sold for £90.

If you were looking for trolley wheels and axles, then this was the sale for you. The lots ranged from sets of four wheels with axles through to pallet loads of pairs, sets and odd wheels, all of which sold well. There were even single and pairs of flywheels for unknown makes and models of engine, but these made very little money.

Footnote: The photos and hammer prices have been taken from the auctioneer’s website and, as always, a buyer’s premium – and VAT on that premium – must be added to get the true price paid for any lot.

This dismantled and incomplete Petter M type sold for £20.

Here we see one of several pallet loads of engine parts. This one sold for £200.

Although a little rusty, this Climax water pump, at just £60, will make a great rally exhibit when restored.

This pair of Tangye alloy name plates sold for £100.
