We report on the sad news that the 1945 Guppy-type American submarine exhibited for years in Charleston harbour, USA, is to be scrapped.

1945 Guppy-type American submarine to be scrapped: This submarine was built at the end of World War II and is to be dismantled because of extensive corrosion and deterioration.

The Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, in South Carolina’s Charleston harbour, has decided to have its submarine, USS Clamagore (SS-343), dismantled and recycled after extensive corrosion, particularly of the vessel’s main ballast tank, was uncovered. It’s been calculated that the repairs and restoration needed would have cost nearly $9 million, which simply isn’t viable.

The submarine, the only example of a Guppy-type III to be preserved, was commissioned in 1945 and decommissioned in 1975. It opened as an exhibit at the museum, alongside the Second World War aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, in the early 1980s.
